Jennifer Horn, newspaper columnist and radio host, announced today that she will challenge Paul Hodes in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District. As part of the announcement, Jennifer Horn released the following statement:
“Congress has failed the American people. With spending out of control, taxes threatening to sky rocket once again, and partisan grid-lock having reached new heights, it is no wonder that the American people have completely lost confidence in Congress. This is not the way government is supposed to be and it’s time for a change.
I am running for Congress in the 2nd District of New Hampshire to return government back to the American people.
Two years ago voters gave Paul Hodes a chance. When he was elected president of the freshman class, Paul Hodes was handed a golden opportunity to show leadership. New Hampshire voters sent Paul Hodes on a mission to change Washington...instead, Washington changed Paul Hodes.
Paul Hodes is a do-nothing Representative in a do-nothing Congress. The people of the 2nd district deserve better and are they are demanding change.
I want to renew the spirit of America. We live in a country where the impossible does not exist and we can achieve our dreams with hard work and dedication. We can make government work again, but we will have to make some changes.
Somewhere along the way we forgot that in our Founding Fathers’ original plan, Representatives would serve their neighbors by going to Washington for a few years, do the work of the people, then return to their jobs and homes and another neighbor would take their place. Congress should look more like you and me. It should be full of citizen legislators that actually represent the people.
It’s time we end the business as usual in Washington. The backroom politicking of lawyers and professional politicians does not serve the people. Legislators who feel more accountable to lobbyists than to their neighbors at home do not serve the people.
The career politicians have made a Washington that has become too big and too intrusive. This is contrary to everything we believe in New Hampshire. When I am in Congress, I pledge to the people of the 2nd District that I will fight every day to make government smaller. This means fighting to keep taxes low and cutting wasteful government spending. It’s our money, not the government’s money, and it should be spent appropriately.
Making government smaller is not enough. We have real problems that demand real solutions. Many families across the 2nd District are struggling with the high cost of gas and heating oil. When I am in Congress, I will work with Democrats and Republicans to develop a long-term energy solution that makes sense and actually helps working families.
Congress has failed to come up with a plan to fix illegal immigration. I will fight for real immigration reform that protects America and does not reward illegal behavior.
The pursuit of power in Washington has caused many to play partisan political games with our men and women who are fighting to protect our freedoms. It is never acceptable to threaten to withhold funds or equipment for our troops to score political points. This is wrong and it must stop. And when our soldiers return home, they deserve the best care America can provide. When I am in congress, I will always fight for those who fight for us.
When it comes down to it, serving in Congress is all about service. The idea of service to neighbors, service to community was at the heart of the plan originally set forth by the Founding Fathers and it is that spirit of service to community that I will help return to the United States Congress.
We deserve a government that represents the people and not the special interests. We deserve a government that is more concerned with what is right than getting re-elected. We deserve a government that is more concerned with the people they represent than their political party.
We have a new day ahead of us. When I am in Congress, I will never take granted for what an awesome privilege that is and will fight everyday for the people of the 2nd District. Together, we will restore people faith in government and renew the promise that is America.”
