Day 2 in Coos County!

Snowshoeing in our Sunday coats!

Saturday was an unexpected pleasure. We had planned a morning of coffee shop stops, which really are an awful lot of fun. At the last minute however, I was invited to join Scott Mason on a short snowshoe trek up the side of a mountain into a sugarbush.

This presented a number of challenges. First, I did not pack for snowshoeing. Second, it had been many years since I had snowshoed and it was one of the coldest days of the year! But Scott said Dave Fuller was a great Coos County business success story, so I had to go.

I can't imagine what we looked like, Gerry and I, snow shoeing up the side of the mountain in our Sunday coats, but it was an extraordinary experience!

The sugarbush was beautiful - all bare branches and fresh snow on the the ground. The network of piping and tubing that strung from one maple tree to the next created quite the maze for us to negotiate, but about 1500 feet up we came upon Dave Fuller, owner of Fuller's Sugar house.

He was busy tapping his trees - thousands of them - preparing for a new season of delicious New Hampshire maple syrup. Dave is a fascinating man - full of information about maple sugaring and Coos County.

And he really is a success story. His family-owned business is growing and each spring they "boil down" about 116,000 gallons of syrup! Over 80 percent of their business is through the internet - people all over the country are enjoying pure New Hampshire maple syrup!

People like Dave Fuller give me hope; a hard-working,generous guy who loves his family, his state and his country. It was a wonderful experience to see the potential of the North Country through the eyes of people who have lived and worked there for their entire lives.

I may have looked foolish climbing that mountain in jeans and my Sunday coat, but I'm so glad I accepted the invitation - I'm looking forward to getting back up there this spring to sample Dave's fresh batch of maple products!"

 Not exactly snowshoeing attire!
